It is officially Eurovision pre-party season, with many official Eurovision parties taking place all over Europe, including Madrid, Barcelona, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Oslo. But don’t worry if you won’t be attending any. Many local bars and pubs are organising Eurovision themed nights and even Eurovision pub quizzes between April and May! And if you are a Eurofan you will have a friend inviting you to a Eurovision themed party very soon (unless that friend is you and you will be the organiser).
Party or not party-goer, in this article we will praise some of the most iconic Eurovision outfits and help you get some inspiration if you are attending any themed-parties!
Abba- Waterloo (representing Sweden, 1974)
We are starting with the most memorable Eurovision outfit that became a fashion movement. Abba appeared on stage with silver and white platform heeled boots, colourful costumes that scream 70s and jackets with chains, pins, badges and patches, referring to the punnk-rock style that was famous within the musicians in the 70s.
You can recreate their style by wearing some blue flares, a blue shirt and some white or silver boots!
Bucks Fizz- Making Your Mind Up (representing UK, 1981)
Another iconic Eurovision outfit from the 80s with the epic skirt reveal moment. Bucks fizz wore colour-coordinated outfits, with the male singers Mike Nolan and Bobby G wearing white trousers with green and blue sweaters, and Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston wearing blue and green midi skirts with red and yellow tops.
But the highlight of this outfit moment was when the male singers ripped off the longer skirts mid-song and revealed super miniskirts, which was something novel for that year!
Ruslana- Wild Dances (representing Ukraine, 2004)
One of the most loved Eurovision-winning songs of all time, because of Ruslana’s energetic performance and unique outfit; a total leather outfit inspired by Xena: The Warrior Princess and the traditional Ukraine uniform.
To recreate this outfit you need a leather mini skirt with a belt, a leather crop top, some leather boots or sandals and a fur to complete your warrior princes theme!
Lordi- Hard Rock Hallelujah (representing Finland, 2006)
This is one of the most memorable fashion moments in the contest. A heavy metal band appeared on stage dressed up as monsters and singing hard rock hallelujah-the commentators had to warn the audience to hide this performance from children in case they find it disturbing. That shows that the outfits were successful and matched their song and energy!
All you need is some monster prosthetics, some wings and a mask- not the easiest one to recreate but definitely an outfit that everyone will be talking about.
Scooch – Flying the flag (for you) (representing UK, 2007)
This is a very easy outfit to recreate and can be worn as Halloween costume too. The British pop band wore blue flight attendant-style outfits, with the female members wearing small red caps, while the male members wore different coloured ties. You can easily recreate this by shopping from ebay or amazon, or if you have a friend or relative that is a flight attendant. Easy but memorable Eurovision outfit!
The mini dress era
The mini dress with heels was very popular in the 2000-2010 era. Mediterranean ladies such as the 2005 winner Helena Paparizou, Kalomira (Greece 2008), Eleftheria Eleftheriou (Greece 2012) and Ivi Adamou (Cyprus 2012) wore a stunning mini-dress with sparkles and heels and performed an amazing dance show. You can recreate those outfits by wearing a fancy mini-dress!
Maneskin- ZITTI E BUONI (representing Italy, 2021)
Of course we couldn’t not include the Italian rockers and fashion icons. Maneskin wrote history in Eurovision by becoming one of the most popular Eurovision winners in recent music history. They are also fashion icons, being front cover of many fashion magazines and attending multiple fashion shows. In Eurovision 2021 they wore ETRO red leather jumpsuits with dark silver studs and silver-coloured laces, which outlined their silhouettes. It is an outfit that stands out.
Here are only a few of the many iconic Eurovision oufits that we’ve seen over the years. Eurvision is not only a music contest, but also a show where each artist and country shows a part of their character and style, and that’s mostly showcased from the outfits they are wearing. Let us know if you enjoyed this post and we can make a part-2 with more iconic outfits!
