Celebrating Greece

Yassas! Today we are celebrating Greece and its national day- a country famous not only for its rich history, from ancient philosophers to groundbreaking science, but also for delivering iconic Eurovision moments. From Balkan beats and ethnic bangers to emotional ballads, Greece has truly done it all on the Eurovision stage. Let’s take a closer look.

Greece made its Eurovision debut in 1974 with the legendary singer Marinella and the song “Krassi, thalassa ke t’ agori mou” (meaning wine, sea and my boyfriend). The country’s early years were steady but modest, with just two top 5 results in the 20th century:

  • 1977: 5th place with Mathema Solfege by Paschalis, Marianna, Robert & Bessy
  • 1992: 5th place again with Olou tou kosmou i elpida by Cleopatra

Everything changed in the 21st century. Greece became one of Eurovision’s most consistent powerhouses, finishing in the top 10 an impressive 10 times between 2001 and 2013. And of course, there’s the moment of the iconic victory. In 2005, Helena Paparizou brought Greece its first Eurovision trophy with ‘My Number One‘—a performance that still defines Greek Eurovision energy to this day.

The years between 2014 and 2019 were a bit more challenging, including two non-qualifications (2016 and 2018). But Greece wasn’t down for long.

The 2020s have seen a strong comeback, with three top 10 finishes so far (2021, 2022 and 2025), and a new wave of memorable entries. From the cultural impact of ‘Zari‘ by Marina Satti to the emotional depth of ‘Asteromata‘ by Klavdia, Greece continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.

This year, all eyes are on Akylas, who will represent Greece with ‘Ferto’ (“bring it”). The song has already caught fans’ attention with its uplifting energy and Akylas’ confident stage presence. Could this be Greece’s next big moment? We’ll find out very soon…
