Celebrating Spain

¡Feliz Día de la Hispanidad! Today, we’re celebrating Spain’s Eurovision journey in honour of Spain’s National Day. What better way to mark the occasion than by revisiting the Spanish legends that have graced the Eurovision stage?

Spain is part of the prestigious “Big 5” – alongside France, Germany, Italy, and the UK – meaning they automatically qualify for the Eurovision final each year. Why? Because these countries make the biggest financial contributions to the contest. But Spain’s Eurovision history goes way beyond just showing up for the final – they’ve had some truly iconic moments!

Spain made its Eurovision debut all the way back in 1961 with Conchita Bautista (yes, another Conchita – not to be confused with Austria’s 2014 winner!). Her song, “Estando Contigo” (which means “Being with You”), landed in 9th place. Spain quickly found its groove, scoring back-to-back wins in 1968 and 1969. Firstly, with Massiel’s “La La La” and the following year with Salomé and her song “Vivo Cantando” (“I Live Singing”).

Fun fact: 1969 was the one and only time Spain has hosted the contest – and it was also one for the history books, as four countries tied for first place: Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the UK! That’s why in 1970 the contest was hosted in the Netherlands.

In recent years, Spain’s Eurovision journey hasn’t been quite smooth. Between 2015 and 2021, Spain struggled to reach the top 20. But then along came Chanel in 2022 with her absolute banger “SloMo”, and she didn’t just turn things around – she slayed, rocketing Spain to a fantastic 3rd place (just before the British Rocket (Space) man- not Elton John, the other one)! Her fierce dance anthem had everyone talking and reminded us all just how much Spain brings to the Eurovision stage.

And there’s even more excitement in store this year! For the very first time, Spain is hosting the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Madrid on November 16th. This will be the second time Spain is hosting a Eurovision event.

Now, let’s hope that Spain takes home another Eurovision victory soon, because honestly – who wouldn’t want an excuse for a holiday in a sunny and warm country?
