Last week we had the thrill of attending the first-ever Eurovision on Tour, and where better for this debut than the vibrant city of Madrid? The event took place at Teatro Magno in the heart of the city- an elegant theatre with the perfect size; big enough to host many people but small enough to get a more intimidate experience!
Arriving an hour before the doors were opening, we were surprised to find only a small queue. To our delight, this meant we could nab a spot right by the stage, getting that prime up-close view every Eurovision fan dreams of.
At 20.00 the show has started and all the performing artists appeared on stage- something like the flag parade in the beginning of Eurovision grand final- wearing sparkling silver outfits. Then our hosts for the evening, Soraya (Spain 2009) and Senhit (San Marino 2011, 2020, 2021) welcomed us with their unmistakable Eurovision spirit, setting the night off with flair. Though they spoke mainly in Spanish, the vibe was international and the energy? Pure Eurovision!
Highlights of the Night
Emmelie de Forest (Denmark 2013) opened the show with a breathtaking version of ‘Refrain’, the very first Eurovision-winning song, and of course she followed up with her own iconic winner, ‘Only Teardrops’.
From there, the night unfolded like a every eurofan’s dream, with Eurovision legends from across the decades taking the stage to work their magic. Here are some of our favourite moments from the night:
• Destiny (Malta 2015 & 2021) performing Loreen’s ‘Euphoria’- a Eurovision anthem if there ever was one. Destiny’s powerful vocals gave it a whole new twist.
• Senhit teaming up with Destiny for a stunning duet of ‘Due Vite’- a pairing we didn’t know we needed but absolutely loved.
• Suzy (Portugal 2014) bringing the crowd to life with her fun, upbeat cover of Ivi Adamou’s ‘La La Love’.
• The legend Carola performing her 2 Eurovision classics: ‘Invincible’ (Sweden 2006) and her winning anthem ‘Fångad av en stormvind’ (Sweden 1991).
• Linda Martin (Ireland 1984 & 1992), Nicki French (UK 2000) and Esther Hart (Netherlands 2003) paying homage to ABBA with an epic performance of ‘Waterloo’- a true Eurovision classic.
• Silia Kapsis delivering a Greek dance medley, setting the stage on fire with ‘Fuego’, ‘My Number One’ and of course, her own ‘Liar’.
• Meeting Silia and The Roop outside the venue!
To top it all off, every artist came back to the stage in their silver outfits for a grand finale, performing Toto Cutugno’s timeless ‘Insieme: 1992’. It was a powerful, united moment that left the whole audience buzzing with Eurovision spirit.
But the night didn’t end there! Feeling the energy and ready to keep celebrating, we headed to Madrid’s vibrant Chueca neighbourhood, where we found Medaigual, a club hosting a Eurovision night – perfectly timed on the last Friday of the month, which lined up with Eurovision on Tour. Eurovision hits filled the night, and the party continued well into the early hours.
All in all, Eurovision on Tour was an incredible experience that satisfied every Eurovision craving until the big event in Basil next May. With stops coming up in London, Warsaw, Australia, and Amsterdam, it’s clear Eurovision fans worldwide are in for a treat!
