Sweden picked up the baton from UK after Loreen’s historic victory in Liverpool and will host the 68th Eurovision Song Contest. And because it’s Sweden, the dates and the place have already been decided.
Where and when is the contest going to be held?
The contest will happen in Malmo, the 3rd largest city in Sweden. It will be the 3rd time Malmo will host the contest, following 1992 and 2013, after Loreen’s first win. The grand final will be held in Malmo arena on the 11th of May, with the first and second semi-finals on 7th and 9th of May respectively.
That will be the 7th time that Sweden will host the contest, making the joint most successful country at the contest with Ireland. The contest was held 3 times in Stockholm (1975, 2000, 2016), 1 time in Gothenburg (1985) and 2 (soon to be 3) times in Malmo.
Here are some facts about the City of Malmo:
- It is a coastal city in southern Sweden, close to the country’s border with Denmark.
- It is the 3rd largest city in Sweden with population just above 300,000.
- It is connected to Copenhagen by the iconic Oresund Bridge.
- It is also referred to as the City of Parks due to its numerous green spaces
- It is the home of Turning Torso: a striking architectural marvel and the tallest building in Scandinavia, at a height of 190 meters
- It has the famous Malmo ice cream – fun fact: Swedes love ice cream- they are the Europe’s biggest consumer of ice cream!
