Love songs in Eurovision

It is the month of love and as we are approaching Valentines Day, we thought to celebrate it in Eurovision style. Love has been an inspiration to many Eurovision songs since the early years, and continues to be one of the most popular song topics.

In 1967, Vicky Leandros (Luxemburg, 4th place) sang about the colours of love in ‘L’amour est bleu’. ‘Blue, blue, love is blue. The sky is blue when you return. Blue, blue, love is blue. Love is blue when you take my hand’. Johnny Logan won the ESC in 1987 singing about a man whose lover is leaving him for someone else, but his love for her will always be alive. ‘I know though we’re apart, we’ll always be together’. More recent Eurovision winners with songs about love include the Olsen Brothers (‘Fly on the wings of love’), Helena Paparizou (‘My number one’), Alexander Rybak (‘Fairytale’), Lenna (‘Satellite’), Ell and Nikki (‘Running scared’), Salvador Sobral (‘Amar pelos dois’), Duncan Laurence (‘Arcade’) and most recently Loreen with ‘Tattoo’.

Love is a versatile topic and can be expressed in many forms- as romantic love, friendship love, family love, love of what we are doing, self-love. It is a strong feeling which can also be associated with feelings of pain, disappointment and sadness. ‘I am in love with a fairytale even though it hurts’, Rybak’s lyrics tell that love can sometimes hurt. ‘A broken heart is all that’s left, I’m still fixing all the cracks’, Duncan sang about heartbreak in his song ‘Arcade’ and won the contest in 2019. However, heartbreaks are also an experience of love and an indication that we loved deeply.

We gathered together in a playlist some of our favourite Eurovision love songs, so you can fall in love with them again this month and have a great Euro-ntine! Cause our love for this contest is the biggest!

Spread the love
