New week, new artists! The weeks are flying by, February is almost gone and most of the songs have already been revealed. Last weekend was another busy weekend for the Eurovision community with Germany, Denmark, Moldova and Lithuania choosing their artists for Malmo 2024. Here we gathered all the updates from last weekend!
Isaak for Germany
Germany chose their representative for Malmo. Last Friday was the German national selection Das deutsche Finale, with 9 acts competing for the Malmo ticket. Isaak won both public and international jury vote with his song ‘Always on the run’. Isaak started his music career in the streets before participating in the German X-Factor in 2011, where he gained fame. He also won the talent show ‘Show your talent’ in 2021. Germany is one of the big 5 countries that qualify straight to the final so Isaak doesn’t have to worry about semi-finals. See you on the grand final day Isaak!
Saba for Denmark
Saba will only have to cross a bridge to represent Denmark at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest with her song ‘Sand’. The Danish Melodi Grand Prix 2024 was hosted on Saturday 17th February, with 8 competing songs. Voting started 5 days before the show, and people could vote each song every day using the official festival app. Those votes were added to the votes received during the live show on Saturday, and combined with the jury votes they determined the top 3 songs to proceed to the Superfinal. Then the jury and people voted again and Saba was placed on top.
Saba is a singer, actress and model living in Denmark since she was 8 months old, when she was adopted from Ethiopia with her twin sister. Both her and her sister followed a music career, with Saba replacing her sister in the musical ‘Hair’ in Copenhagen, after her sister became pregnant. Saba will sing ‘Sand’ in Malmo, a powerful song about following your dreams and grabbing life by.
Natalia Barbu for Moldova
Natalia Barbu won the Etapa Nationala and will represent Moldova in ESC2024 with her song ‘In the Middle’. The Moldovan National Final was held on Saturday 17th of February with 11 finalists competing for a ticket to Malmo. The winner was chosen after televote and jury vote. Natalia Barbu is a 44-year-old Moldovan singer, songwriter and violinist. She started her career in 1998 after winning a competition but it wasn’t until 2006 when her career took off and she released her first single. Now she counts 4 studio albums. Natalia is not a stranger to the contest- she represented Moldova in 2007 with the song ‘Fight’, qualifying to the final. We hope not only she qualifies but also achieves a good position in the grand final in Malmo!
Silvester Belt for Lithuania
Silvester Belt won the final of the Lithuanian national selection Eurovizija.LT last Saturday and will represent his country in Malmo with the song ‘Luktelk’(=’Wait’). Eurovizija.LT is a brand-new national selection show that replaced the previous Pabandom is naujo! national final, which chose the Lithuanian entry in the years 2020-2023. It consisted in total of 6 shows, with 40 songs competing for the desired Malmo ticket. Only 10 songs qualified for the final, with the top 3 (selected equally by jury and public vote) qualifying to the Superfinal. Then the winner was chosen solely by the televote, and it was Silvester Belt, followed by Shower and The Roop.
Silvester Belt is a 26-year-old Lithuanian singer and songwriter. He studied musical studies in London and gained popularity after winning the Lithuanian TV show As-superhitas. After that he released some singles and participated in the Lithuanian X-factor. His style is mainly pop and his song ‘Luktelk’ is a Lithuanian powerful pop song. This year it would be the 30th anniversary of Lithuania’s participation in the contest. Will it be a lucky one? We will find out in a few months!
