Slogan announcement
On Tuesday the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Swedish public broadcaster SVT revealed the slogan for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, which is going to be ‘United By Music’. This will also be the permanent slogan of the contest, with all the upcoming contests adopting that slogan.
Sounds familiar? That’s because it was used as last year’s contest slogan in Liverpool. It was created by the British broadcaster BBC to showcase the unique partnership between United Kingdom, Ukraine and the host city Liverpool to host the 2023 contest. It showed the collaboration of the two countries to bring the ESC to audiences across the globe and the incredible power of music to bring communities together.
‘United by Music’ was a successful and powerful slogan, used by the BBC widely to promote the contest. It is a slogan representing accurately the core values of Eurovision, including inclusivity, equality, universality and celebrating diversity through music. The Eurovision Song Contest is more than just an annual show, it’s a celebration of the power of music to bring people together. That’s why that slogan was decided to be used not only for the upcoming contest in Malmö but also for all the future contests. That decision is part of the Contest’s global brand strategy, to create continuity and consistency for future ESCs.
The artwork which will accompany the slogan for the 2024 ESC will be announced in the coming months.
Eurovision slogans through the years
Since 2002 (and up until 2023) each country created its own slogan accompanying the theme artwork when hosting. The first one created was Estonia’s ‘A Modern Fairytale’ in 2002. Slogans were usually inspired by the core values of Eurovision in promoting unity. They were also inspired by the host nation’s tradition and history. For example, Azerbaijan’s ‘Light your Fire’ represented the country’s nickname ‘Land of Fire’.
